Neuromodulator FAQs (Botox + Xeomin)

Botox, Xeomin, Dysport and Jeuveau, collectively referred to as neuromodulators or neurotoxins, are brand names of botulinum toxin type A, a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In the aesthetic world, neuromodulators are injected into targeted treatment areas using an ultra fine needle. It works by preventing the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction which temporarily blocks the nerve signals needed for facial muscles to contract and sweat glands to activate.

How can neuromodulators help me?

How can neuromodulators help me?

When delivered in small doses, these medications can:
  • help prevent the formation of facial wrinkles
  • soften superficial facial wrinkles that have already formed
  • create fuller looking lips without the need for filler
  • lift brows
  • improve a "gummy" smile
  • treat migraines
  • soften dimpling of chin
  • improve excessive sweating in the underarms (hyperhidrosis)
  • treat pain and relax the masseter muscles associated with teeth grinding (bruxism)

When will I see results?

When will I see results?

Neuromodulators start working within 2-7 days. You will see the full effect of treatment after 14 days. Results last up to 3 to 4 months.

How often do I need to return for treatment?

How often do I need to return for treatment?

That depends on what your current concerns are, what your goals are, what your budget is and if you have any special events lined up. We will devise a tailored plan to your needs. However, it will not be more frequently than every 3 months. Most people get treatments every 3 - 6 months to yield the best results.

Are neuromodulators just for women? Is anyone too old or too young?

Are neuromodulators just for women? Is anyone too old or too young?

You must be at least 18 years old to be a patient of Serenity Medical Aesthetics. There is no upper age limit for neuromodulator treatment. We evaluate if patients are good candidates for neuromodulators based on their goals, medical history and a physical exam - not based on age or gender. The medication has the same effect on men as women, however it is often the case that men will need more medication because they have stronger musculature.

Does neurotoxin treatment hurt?

Does neurotoxin treatment hurt?

Neurotoxin treatment causes minimal discomfort. Most people describe it as a pinching feeling. The treatment is quick and the discomfort subsides almost immediately after injection. We can place a cold pack on your treatment area to further minimize discomfort if you wish.

Are there any side effects of neurotoxins?

Are there any side effects of neurotoxins?

In the aesthetics world, neurotoxins are injected at such small doses at very specific locations that they are usually very well tolerated and side effects are rare. However, with any procedure there is always a risk. Some of these are listed below. If you plan to get neurotoxin treatment, you will receive pre and post procedure instructions so you can do your part to mitigate these risks.
  • Minor bruising, swelling or pain to the treatment area
  • Asymmetrical / droopy eyebrow or eyelid
  • Headache / neck stiffness
  • Asymmetrical smile
  • Hoarse voice / trouble Swallowing
  • Blurry / double vision

What is the difference between Botox and Xeomin?

What is the difference between Botox and Xeomin?

Botox and Xeomin are both brands of botulinum toxin A, the main protein that is responsible for wrinkle relaxing.  Research shows the Xeomin and Botox are equivalent as far as onset of action (when it starts working) and duration (how long it lasts).  Xeomin is considered slightly more natural because it lacks extra proteins that hold the active molecule together and, unlike Botox, there is no risk of developing antibodies against Xeomin.

Dermal Filler FAQs

What are dermal fillers and how do they work?

What are dermal fillers and how do they work?

Dermal fillers are products injected into the skin to improve shape, proportion, lines, shadows or wrinkles. Based on a clinician's training and comfortability, dermal fillers can be injected into the lips, perioral lines, cheeks, chin, jawline, nasolabial folds, tear troughs and nose among other locations. In the aesthetic industry, the exact product used in the dermal filler varies, but at Serenity Medical Aesthetics, we use hyaluronic acid based fillers that can be dissolved if needed.

Thanks to topical numbing cream and lidocaine in the filler itself, these treatments are comfortable for most people.

When will I see results?

When will I see results?

Unlike neurotoxins that can take up to 2 weeks to see results, results of dermal fillers can be appreciated immediately. Some dermal fillers have a higher affinity for water so you might see increasing plumpness over the next several days post treatment. It is typical to evaluate how the filler settled completely at about 2 weeks post treatment.

How long do results last and when do I need to return for treatment?

How long do results last and when do I need to return for treatment?

Depending on the filler used and the patient's individual metabolism, filler can last between 6 and 24 months. Follow up treatments can happen when the patient feels that the effects of the filler are waning.

What are the possible side effects?

What are the possible side effects?

Dermal filler treatments are usually very well tolerated and serious side effects are rare. However, with any procedure there is always a risk. Some common side effects are nonpainful swelling and bruising that typically subside over 2 weeks. We advise taking Arnica a few days before and a few days after your treatment to help. Other possible side effects include infection, skin lumps, allergic reaction, and most rarely, severe scarring caused by filler blocking a blood vessel. If you plan to get filler treatment, you will receive pre and post procedure instructions so you can do your part to mitigate these risks.

Do you offer 1/2 syringes?

Do you offer 1/2 syringes?

Half syringes for lip filler are only available if both people are present at the same time.  This could work in a Botox party setting where two friends decide they each want to get half syringe of lip filler at the party. The price per 1/2 syringe is $450 per person and no additional discounts apply.  Another option is for one person to purchase a full syringe and split it between their lips and smile lines to maximize the value of one syringe.
